SCALLOP EDGES CLEAN FINISHED
The appropriate clean finish turn under for this Madeira technique is no more than 1/4".
Clean hem finish the scallop edges using this successful technique.
Using water soluble thread in the bobbin,
align 2 layers of hem strips right sides together,
and stitch along the scallop marking lines.
Trim the seam allowance to 1/4" clip, turn,
& Press with steam iron
The steam melts the bobbin thread away so you can carefully separate the strips.
Now you have the 1/4" hem pressed in place on both strips.
Repeat for the other two hem strips.
Use the built in flowers from the Ellagéo Shadow embroidered butterflies disk using Nancy Zieman "Memories of Home"
Select an embroidery design with a fill stitch AND outline stitch fill stitch on the bottom layer outline stitch on the top layer using the same color needle thread throughout.
MITER HEM CORNERS
Select directional stitching 45 angle Lay 2 completed hem strips right sides together aligning the straight edges. Stitch miter starting at the corner of the straight edge of the hem strip out to the scallop edge.
Repeat this for all four corners Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press the seam allowances open.
Now you have the hem strips in the form of a picture frame. 45" X 45"
Attach the right side of the hem to the wrong side of the tablecloth along all four edges. Sew with 1/2" seam allowances
Trim to 1/4", clip and trim corners, turn the hem to the right side of the tablecloth.
Carefully press - favoring the scallop hem
Hemstitch along the entire scallop edge of the hem using size 100 wing needle. Adjust the hemstitch to SW 2-1/2 SL 4
The back and forth stitch motion should be on the single layer of the table cloth, while the jump stitch to the right should be through all the layers of the scallop hem. Remember to pivot at each peak.
Be sure to use size 60 wt. or less thread in the needle and bobbin is the same color as the hem.
COVERSTITCH (Evolvé) BORDER.
Using a coverstitch wide with three cones of the same color thread. Measure about 3" to 4" in towards the center of the cloth from the scallop edge of the hem. Stitch border following the scallop shapes.
1 Yd. fabric for 4 napkins

Cut napkin fabric to the finished size PLUS desired hem depth, and 1 extra inch.
i.e. finished napkin_____14" X 14"____________
hem depth_____3"___________plus 1"__=4"______
Mark finished size in the center of the napkin. These will be fold lines for the hem.
With fusible thread in the bobbin, stitch five scallops on each side using the built-in quilting scallop stitch #6-111. Peaks toward cut edge of fabric.
Cut just outside the stitching line. The bobbin thread will now be on the wrong side of the hem.
Fold scallop corner right sides together.
Using the directional stitching #6-08 start stitching the miter of 45 to the cut edges. Start stitching at foldline mark. Trim the miter to 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat this on all four corners. Turn the hem to the right side of the napkin. A point turner is quite helpful.
