January Project - "The Curling Iron Caddy"
Presented by: OK Sewing & Vacuum Center

"Curling Iron Caddy"

Supples Needed:

1/4 yard fabric: quilted, denim, Ultrasuede, or similar fabrics
1/4 yard fleece (for easiest sewing, use fusible fleece. As an option, use traditional fleece.)
1/4 yard "Iron Quick" Teflon-Coated fabric, fabric for making bias tape.
3/4" (18mm) Bias Tape Maker

Directions:

1. Base: Cut 9" x 14" rectangles of fabric, fleece, and "Iron Quick" Teflon-Coated fabric.

Pocket: Cut a 9" x 9" fabric rectangle.

2. Round lower edges of all 9" x 14" rectangles, tracing the shape of a cup or plate. Mark with a marking pen. Round lower corners of 9" x 9" rectangle. Trim along marked lines.

3. Add the pocket to the caddy.
* Encase pocket edge opposite the rounded edge with bias tape. For a custom made look, use the Bias Tape Maker to make your own bias tape from bias strips of coordinating or contrasting fabric. Just slip the bias strip in one end of the Tape Maker, and press the tape as you pull it out the other end. To make double fold bias tape, meet folded edges and press again. (Or, as an alternative, serge or zigzag the edge; then turn under a 1: hem. Secure hem with straight stitching or decorative stitching.)

* Position pocket on lower corner of larger rectangle, meeting rounded edges, with wrong side of pocket next to right side of rectangle. Stitch 1/8" from unhemmed edges.

4. Meet fusible side of fleece to wrong side of Teflon-Coated fabric. Fuse. Trim 1/8" - 1/4" from the outer curved edges to reduce bulk.

5. Position the fleece/Teflon section on the wrong side of the large rectangle, Teflon side up. Outer edges of fleece/Teflon section should be approximately 1/8-1/4" from fabric outer edges.

6. Encase upper edge with bias tape.

7. Fold caddy in half, wrong sides together, meeting rounded edges. Straight stitch along outer edges, bar tacking at upper edges for reinforcement.

8. Encase outer edges with bias tape, folding under cut ends. (Or, serge outer edges using a wide overlock stitch.)
