The Tulip Tote Bag!

photo of project

Cut all pieces:

PETALS: 4 print fabric / 4 yellow fabric / 8 interfacing.

BASE: 1 print fabric / 1 yellow fabric / 2 interfacing.

HANDLE: 1 green fabric 3" x 54" / 1 interfacing 3" x 54".

POCKET: 1 piece 6" x 8".

Directions:

1. Fuse interfacing to all pieces.

2. Construct pocket - fold fabric in half to measure 4" x 6". Serge with decorative three thread stitch around 3 cut edges. Thread tails through large-eyed tapestry needle and weave under stitches approximately 1" on back side of work. Seam seal corners, let dry and clip remaining thread tails.

3. Topstitch pocket on 3 serged sides to right side of one lining piece centering 3/8" above point of dart.

4. Flatlock ling cut edge of handle piece with 2 or 3 thread flatlock stitch. Flatten and press. Decorative seam will run down center of handle. Set aside.

The Tulip Bag!

1. Mark placement lines on 2 petal lining pieces (without pocket).

2. Stitch darts in all 8 petal pieces with regular 4-thread serger stitch.

3. Place 1 outer and 1 lining petal wrong sides together. Serge with 3-thread decorative stitch around 2 long cut sides of each petal beginning at base of petal. Pivot at top of petal and continue serging down other long side. Continue for 3 remaining pairs of petals.

4. Topstitch petal together on placement lines, leaving final petal unstitched. A flat surface is easier to work on!

5. Fabric glue-stick handle on outside of 2 petals (petals on either side of pocket petal). Starting at bottom of bag, topstitch close to one long edge, pivoting at top, sewing across, pivoting and continuing down other side to bottom.

6. Topstitch final petal in place.

7. serge with regular 4-thread stitch around bottom cut edge of bag.

8. Place base pieces wrong sides together and serge with regular 4-thread stitch around all edges. Press under 5/8" around base. Center over bottom opening and topstitch to bottom of bag.

Some of you have expressed a problem printing the above pattern as a whole. I have split the pattern into 3 smaller pieces for easier printing.

Each pattern piece should print on it's own 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.
The largest piece will need to be put together, it measures 15" x 6".

This is the top half of the largest pattern piece,
it alone should measure 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" I hope this will help you.
